“With joyous praise and thunderous applause, victory is finally at hand. Ushered in by our new King, Remington Steelle, an era of peace has come to our land. With his brave heart and skill on the battlefield he made easy work of those constructs and cut through the hordes of undead. Yes our future is safe now, thanks our king the Man of Steel.” –Words on a Haven poster from after the victory of the Rift War
Truly a marvelous victory and one well needed for the land of Vercution, for it has been showered in blood for hundreds of years. Yet, rumors had begun to spread speculating on the sheer speed of the victory. Taking less than two months to conquer nearly two-thirds of Vercution, especially after Haven was recently on the backfoot and losing ground. Worse yet after the capture of the Lich, known only as the Lord of Eyes, the king is found murdered on his throne and the lich pronounced dead without a trial or public execution. Truly some very strange events and all taking place over such a short time span. Many of the well informed were left to their own conspiracy theories varying from the plausible to the downright insane. But these cries of conspiracy were thoroughly drowned out by the drunken shouts of those too happy to question it. Sure, the government was in a bit of disarray but that was their problem. Now was the time to rejoice, and for some, profit.
With the war over and Haven’s enemies crushed there was plenty of room for expansion and knowledge. Those that travelled southeast were promised plentiful precious metals and lots of valuable technology left over from the constructs. To the south, the land had begun to return to normal and farmers had new fresh land to claim and till. To the southwest… well some of the various corpses had large animal bones that were used for ivory. Not to mention the Lord of Eye’s stronghold had not been thoroughly plundered by the military, so those brave few men with a sharp eye who ventured there nabbed a few items that will fetch a high price on the black market. And who was going to protect this land? The military was plenty thinned out as it were, forcing the king to rely on expensive mercenaries to fill in the gaps. The future is certainly looking bright for Haven.
Yet for every creature that basks in the light, there is shadow right behind them. With Havens ranks thinly stretched to cover its new growth, enemies across the sea have their maws salivating with the hunger for war. To deal with this problem, the young King is assembling mercenaries to meet them at their own land. Why would he want to further reduce havens numbers like this? None can say with certainty, but from the common man’s perspective it is believed that the King wants to send to a message to the other nations. A message that tells them that we still have the strength to go on the offensive in the hopes that the threat of a possible counterattack will dissuade their bloodlust. A risky but bold call. Even still, the price is all but too exuberant to pass up. The job was simple too: Get on a ship, travel the world, obey the command, and return home. There was no real guarantee for life threatening combat, either.
It was all just too good to be true, but was it? Perhaps when the stupor has worn off and the sun has set, we will all realize the nightmare we have been doomed to live. Or we will all wake up to find that it was all just a bad dream.
