"Life is Bearable.
These are not words of passing wisdom, nor are they something to be used as a shrug-off of responsibility or a way to justify unruly methods. No, these are words passed down from mentor to student, after hours and hours of practice, after the mentor brings the student to places of peace, where only the sounds of exhaustion are heard. These are words engraved on the backs of shields and in the forefronts of minds, read and reread, memorized and remembered, so that each day its lesson is taught. These are words to help with the sorrow of the passing of teacher, a father, a mother, two brothers and a mentor. These words are reminders of a lesson learned years and years ago, but shall live through the ages, so long as they are forever taught to young shield-bearers and engraved on their shields.
These are the words to break fatigue from training. To bring warmth to evenings alone. To bring joy to the darkest days, and to bring enough humility that confidence never exceeds talent. Words to live by, and words that I shall die by.
I have met men who have sworn by justice. Who have spoken of truth. Who have spoken grimly of vengeance of lovers lost, or children never to be, or might have been. I have met men who follow the path of righteousness, before I heard news of their deaths not long after. I have met men of too many virtues to fully remember, only to know that they have been blind-sided, ignorant, or, at the least, unaware, of the reality of things as they are.
But I am no such man.
Know this, so long as you stay in my company, I am what separates you from death. So long as you are my ally, I will do what I must in order to be your sanctuary. That while others fall, I remain standing. That while others may run, I will protect your retreat. And that while cities and armies may come and go, I will remain by your side to keep evil at bay. And you shall know that this shield, passed on from a man on his deathbed, to a girl still able to count her age by two hands and a foot, isn't here to keep her safe, but to make sure that you have as much time as I can give you, whether it be a minute or the rest of your life. You will know me, and I shall do what I can to keep your wounds few, your life your own and your burdens few.
